Malapascua Island Thresher Shark Diving
About this tour
There is exactly one place in the world where scuba divers can reliably and repeatedly encounter pelagic thresher sharks in the wild: Monad Shoal, a submerged seamount just off Malapascua island in northern Cebu. These sleek, deep-water predators — with tails as long as their bodies — rise from the abyss each morning to visit cleaning stations at 20–30 metres depth, and they have done so every single day, reliably, for as long as anyone can remember.
The dive begins before dawn. Boats leave Malapascua's white-sand pier by 5am, reaching Monad Shoal as the first light filters down from above. Descend to the cleaning station on the shoal's plateau and hang neutrally buoyant, watching. The sharks arrive in ones and twos, banking through the blue water with those extraordinary elongated tails trailing behind them like silk ribbons. A good morning brings 4–6 individuals and multiple close passes. It is, without exaggeration, one of the top five dive experiences in Southeast Asia.
After the shark dive, the rest of the day is yours on Malapascua — a tiny island with no traffic, white-coral beaches and a handful of excellent dive resorts. An optional second dive on the Dona Marilyn wreck or Gato Island is available for those who want more underwater time.

About the area
Malapascua Island sits off the northern tip of Cebu, reached by a 30-minute boat from Maya port after a 4-hour drive from Cebu City. The island is tiny — you can walk across it in 20 minutes — but it punches far above its weight in the diving world. Bounty Beach on the south shore is postcard-perfect white sand, and the dive resorts range from budget bungalows to comfortable boutique operations.
Plan at least two nights to do the island justice and catch two or three thresher shark dives. Check our Cebu guide for transport details, dive resort recommendations and what to expect at Monad Shoal.
