Manila is chaotic, exhausting, and strangely compelling — and almost nobody's final destination, but most people's entry point. Give it a day rather than rushing to the airport. Intramuros, the 16th-century Spanish walled city, is worth a morning: rent a bamboo bicycle inside the walls and find Café de las Casas for coffee in a courtyard. Fort Santiago and the Manila Ocean Park are nearby. Makati is where you eat well: a night in Poblacion (craft cocktail bars, Japanese restaurants, street food)
