Whale Shark Watching in Oslob
About this tour
In the small coastal barangay of Tan-awan in Oslob, southern Cebu, you can slip into the water beside the largest fish in the sea. Whale sharks, called butanding locally, gather here year-round, and this half-day experience puts you face to face with these gentle, polka-dotted giants that can grow over ten metres long. After a mandatory orientation covering the rules and safety, you are fitted with a life vest and snorkel gear and taken by traditional outrigger just offshore for around 30 minutes in the water with the sharks.
On any given morning, several whale sharks cruise slowly through the interaction zone near the surface, often coming within arm's reach, though touching is strictly forbidden. The rules exist to protect the animals: keep at least four metres from the head and tail, no flash photography, and absolutely no chemical sunscreen, which harms marine life, so wear a rash guard instead. Activity is busiest early, so the experience runs in the morning, with last interactions typically wrapping up by late morning.
Many visitors pair the encounter with a stop at the nearby Tumalog Falls, a cascading curtain waterfall just a short ride away. It is a bucket-list wildlife moment and one of the most accessible places on Earth to swim alongside a whale shark.
