Catarman Wildlife Sanctuary & Birding Tour — Northern Samar

Northern Samar is one of the least visited provinces in the Philippines, which means that what's left of its forests has survived in a state of relative preservation that would be impossible in more accessible parts of the archipelago. The wildlife sanctuary zone around Catarman, the provincial capital, encompasses a patchwork of old-growth and secondary forest, mangrove edges, freshwater lakes, and coastal scrub that together form one of the Eastern Philippines' most important avifaunal refuges. For birders, this is a destination that rivals Palawan in terms of endemic species density — and attracts a fraction of the visitors.

The full-day tour begins at 5 AM to catch the peak bird activity in the forest interior. The primary target species include the Samar hornbill (endemic to Samar and Leyte), the Visayan broadbill, the Philippine cockatoo (locally known as katala), Steere's kingfisher, and the extraordinarily beautiful Rufous hornbill. With patience and an expert local guide, a single day can yield sightings of 50-80 bird species. Non-birders will find the forest itself extraordinary: towering dipterocarps with buttress roots taller than a person, orchids growing from every branch, and the constant chittering of gecko and frog species found nowhere else in the world.

Midday, the tour visits a grassland and freshwater lake area where Philippine deer (Cervus mariannus) graze in the open, monitor lizards sun on rocky outcrops, and purple swamphens stalk through the reeds. A community-maintained bird observation platform at the lake edge provides elevated views across the water and into the surrounding treeline. The afternoon loop returns through secondary forest where macaque monkeys follow the trail at a respectful distance, occasionally descending to investigate the tourists with calm, intelligent curiosity.
