Allen-San Isidro Mangrove Eco Tour — Northern Samar

The mangrove forests of Allen and San Isidro in Northern Samar represent one of the last large-scale, contiguous mangrove ecosystems in the Eastern Philippines. Stretching across thousands of hectares of coastline and river mouths in one of the archipelago's most remote and underdeveloped provinces, these forests are not just scenically extraordinary — they are ecologically critical, serving as the nursery ground for the fisheries that sustain an entire coastal population, as storm buffer protection for communities along the Northern Samar coast, and as habitat for an astonishing diversity of birds, reptiles, and marine life that find nowhere else in Samar quite like it.

The eco tour takes place entirely by traditional kayak — both single and tandem options available — guided by community-trained local naturalists who know these waterways intimately. The route follows the major mangrove channels between Allen and San Isidro, penetrating deep into the forest interior where the canopy closes overhead and the water turns the colour of dark jade. Brahminy kites and Philippine sea eagles circle overhead; banded kingfishers dart across the channels; mudskippers and fiddler crabs perform their strange intertidal choreography on the exposed mud banks at low tide. Occasionally, a large saltwater crocodile track in the mud will prompt a respectful change of course.

The tour concludes at a community-run visitor area where local families have built simple bamboo platforms over the water, and where traditional mangrove cooking — steamed shellfish, grilled freshwater crab — is prepared fresh from the morning's harvest. This is ecotourism as it should be: community-owned, ecologically sensitive, and deeply connected to the natural world that sustains it.
