About this tour

Catanduanes, the rugged island province off Bicol's eastern coast, is one of the Philippines' last under-the-radar adventure destinations, and this two-day circuit captures its best. The star is Puraran Beach in Baras, home to the world-class wave known as Majestic, a fast, hollow, right-hand barrel that draws serious surfers during the typhoon and northeast monsoon seasons. The golden-sand bay also has gentler shoulder waves and a coral reef for swimming and snorkeling when the swell is mellow, so it suits both surfers and beachgoers.

Beyond the surf, the circuit weaves in Catanduanes' dramatic scenery. A short ride away lies Binurong Point, where sloping green hills and sea-carved rock formations make for an unforgettable sunrise hike along cliff-edge trails. The route also visits the island's lush waterfalls and river spots, such as the cascades and pools fed by the surrounding rainforest, giving you a freshwater counterpoint to the wild Pacific coast. With two days you get enough time to surf, hike and chase falls across one of the country's most scenic and least crowded islands.

About the area

Catanduanes lies off the eastern tip of the Bicol Peninsula, separated from Camarines Sur by the Maqueda Channel and reachable by ferry from Tabaco or by short flights to Virac, the capital. Often called the Land of the Howling Winds for its exposure to Pacific storms, the island is celebrated for surf breaks, rugged coastline, waterfalls and a refreshingly untouristed feel.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to surf to enjoy this trip?
No. Puraran is beautiful for swimming and relaxing, and the circuit's hikes and waterfalls appeal to non-surfers. Surfers should note Majestic is an advanced reef wave best ridden during swell season.
When does the Majestic wave work best?
The biggest, most consistent swell arrives during the northeast monsoon and typhoon season, roughly August to November. Outside that, the bay is often calm and good for swimming.
How hard is the Binurong Point hike?
It is a moderate trek of around 30 to 45 minutes over rolling hills, usually done at dawn for the sunrise. Sturdy footwear is recommended as trails can be muddy after rain.
