About this tour

The waters off Panglao and Balicasag are part of the Bohol Sea, a deep oceanic channel that acts as a permanent highway for cetaceans migrating between the Pacific and the Sulu Sea. Over 14 species have been recorded here — more than almost anywhere else in the Philippine archipelago — making Bohol one of the country's best-kept whale watching secrets.

Tours depart before dawn to reach the cetacean zone as the sun rises, which is also when spinner dolphins are most active at the surface. These acrobatic animals live in large pods and routinely approach boats, leaping and spinning in the bow wake. In season (roughly November–May), the deeper offshore waters also produce sightings of dwarf sperm whales, false killer whales, and occasionally pantropical spotted dolphins in pods of hundreds.

The return trip back to Panglao often includes a snorkeling stop at a shallow reef, so bring your fins. Guides are experienced naturalists who can identify species on the spot and will position the boat at a respectful distance to avoid disturbing the animals. This is wildlife watching at its most genuine — no captive dolphins, no guarantees, just real animals in a real ocean. Book via Klook for the best operator pricing and pick-up from Alona Beach or Tagbilaran.

Frequently asked questions

Are whale and dolphin sightings guaranteed?
Dolphin sightings are near-certain as large resident pods live in the area year-round. Whale sightings are seasonal and weather-dependent — the operator will advise based on recent sightings.
What is the best season for whales?
November to May, during the dry season, offers the calmest seas and highest whale sighting probability. Spinner dolphins are present year-round.
Can I take photos?
Yes — a telephoto lens is ideal for cetaceans. The sea conditions are usually calm enough for steady shots in the early morning.
