About this tour

Held every January in Kalibo, the Ati-Atihan Festival is the mother of all Philippine festivals, the oldest and most spirited of the country's fiestas. Its roots blend a 13th-century legend, when Bornean datus traded with the indigenous Ati people, with Spanish-era devotion to the Santo Nino (the Holy Child Jesus). Revellers blacken their faces with soot in tribute to the Ati and dance through the streets in tribal costume to relentless drumbeats, chanting Hala Bira, Puera Pasma.

This two-day immersion tour throws you into the famous sadsad, the shuffling street dance where there are no spectators, only participants. You join thousands moving as one to the hypnotic, building rhythm of drums, with painted faces, feathers and elaborate costumes everywhere you look. Unlike more choreographed festivals, Ati-Atihan is raw, communal and deeply devotional, climaxing in a grand procession honouring the Santo Nino.

Your guide helps you understand the layered history, the religious devotion and the etiquette of joining in, so you experience it as more than a photo opportunity. It is loud, sweaty, joyful and unforgettable, the ultimate Filipino fiesta. The tour runs only during the festival, traditionally peaking on the third Sunday of January.

About the area

Kalibo is the capital of Aklan province in the Western Visayas, and the usual gateway to Boracay. Each January it becomes the stage for the Ati-Atihan Festival, regarded as the oldest fiesta in the Philippines and the ancestor of the country's other great Santo Nino celebrations, a wild fusion of indigenous tribute, Catholic devotion and pure communal joy.

Frequently asked questions

When does Ati-Atihan take place?
It is held every January in Kalibo, Aklan, with the festivities building toward a climax on the third Sunday of the month, in honour of the Santo Nino.
Can visitors join the dancing?
Absolutely. Ati-Atihan is famous for having no spectators, only participants. Visitors are welcomed into the sadsad street dance, and your guide will help you join in respectfully.
How is it different from other Santo Nino festivals?
Ati-Atihan is the oldest and most freewheeling of them. Cebu's Sinulog and Iloilo's Dinagyang grew from the same tradition, but Ati-Atihan keeps a rawer, more participatory, tribal-style character.
