About this tour

Known to climbers simply as G2, Mount Guiting-Guiting on Sibuyan Island is widely regarded as one of the most difficult and technical mountains in the Philippines, rated at the maximum difficulty of 9/9. Rising to 2,058 metres, its name means jagged or serrated, a perfect description of the saw-toothed ridgeline that defines the climb. This four-day expedition is a serious mountaineering challenge for experienced hikers only.

The route passes through a remarkable gradient of ecosystems, from lowland and montane forest into eerie mossy forest dotted with pitcher plants, before breaking out onto the exposed summit ridge. The signature obstacles are legendary: the Knife Edge, a razor-thin ridge with sheer drops on both sides demanding precise footing, plus rock features with names like the 90-degree wall and Kiss the Wall, where you must scramble and cling to vertical rock. The reward is a summit of cloud seas and a skyline that looks hand-cut with a serrated blade.

Sibuyan itself is called the Galapagos of Asia for its dense endemic biodiversity, having never been connected to another landmass. This climb requires prior mountaineering experience, a good head for heights and solid fitness, plus mandatory local guides and permits. It is one of the ultimate trekking trophies in the country.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need prior mountaineering experience?
Yes, absolutely. G2 is rated 9/9, the hardest grade in the Philippines, with technical scrambling, exposed ridges and the Knife Edge. It is strictly for experienced, fit climbers with a head for heights, not a casual hike.
Are guides mandatory?
Yes. The Mount Guiting-Guiting Natural Park requires registered local guides, and given the route's difficulty and exposure they are essential for safety and navigation.
How long and how hard is the climb?
This expedition runs four days. Reaching the summit involves many hours of steep, technical climbing through varied terrain, demanding strong fitness, stamina and prior high-difficulty hiking experience.
