Siargao Cloud 9 Surfing Lesson

Siargao is the surfing capital of the Philippines, and Cloud 9, the reef break that put it on the world map, is the island's most famous wave. This lesson introduces you to surfing with a local SISA-certified instructor who handles the board, reads the conditions and gets you standing as quickly and safely as possible. Beginners are typically taught at the gentler, sandy-bottomed beach breaks around General Luna rather than the powerful Cloud 9 reef itself, which is reserved for experienced surfers, so you learn in the right conditions for your level.

Over roughly two hours your instructor covers the basics on the sand, paddling technique, pop-ups and ocean safety, before guiding you into the water to catch your first waves. The warm tropical water, consistent swell and one-on-one or small-group attention mean most first-timers are riding whitewater and even standing up within their first session.

Siargao surfs all year, but the biggest, cleanest swells arrive from September to November. Outside those months the smaller shoulder-season waves are actually ideal for learning, making this a great introduction to surfing whenever you visit.
