About this tour

This full-day adventure in the cool highlands of Sagada combines the country's most famous spelunking route with a hike to its iconic hanging coffins. The Cave Connection links two great caves, Lumiang and Sumaguing, into a single underground traverse of roughly three to four hours, where you crawl through tight passages, swim through cold subterranean pools and clamber down slick rock faces by the light of a lantern.

At the mouth of Lumiang Cave you pass a wall of around 100 ancient wooden coffins, some estimated to be 500 years old, stacked nine layers high, a striking reminder of the Igorot burial tradition still practised here. The route emerges through the chambers and formations of Sumaguing Cave, often called the Big Cave.

The day also includes a hike through Echo Valley, passing St. Mary's Episcopal Church and a hillside cemetery to a cliff face where wooden coffins hang from the rock, the famous hanging coffins of Sagada. It is an unforgettable mix of physical adventure and living indigenous culture.

Frequently asked questions

How difficult is the Cave Connection?
It is physically demanding, lasting 3 to 4 hours with crawling, swimming and climbing in the dark. A reasonable level of fitness, basic swimming and no fear of tight spaces are needed. Sumaguing alone is an easier 1 to 1.5 hour option.
Is a guide mandatory?
Yes. Guides are required for both the caves and Echo Valley, and they are essential for safe navigation underground.
What should I wear?
Wear clothes you do not mind getting wet and muddy, and footwear with good grip. Many people go barefoot inside the cave for traction on wet rock.
