About this tour

The Sablayan coast is home to one of the largest and least-disturbed mangrove forests in the Philippines, a sprawling 2,000-hectare tidal ecosystem that stretches along the Occidental Mindoro shoreline and inland along river channels. While Sablayan is better known as the gateway to Apo Reef, this mangrove paddle offers a completely different perspective on the island's natural heritage — one that moves at the pace of the tide rather than the dive boat.

The guided kayaking route enters the mangrove system from a small fishing village, immediately leaving behind any sense of civilization. Within minutes, the channels narrow and the canopy closes overhead, filtering the light to a cool green-gold. The silence is broken only by bird calls — kingfishers, herons, and the distinctive hammering of the collared kingfisher are audible if not always visible. The mangrove root systems below the waterline are visible in the clear tidal water: nursery habitat for juvenile fish, crabs, and shrimps that sustain the local fishing community.

Your guide — a local fisherman who has worked these channels his entire life — navigates the labyrinth without hesitation, pointing out wildlife, explaining the traditional fishing techniques (fish traps, hand-line crabbing, shrimp trawl nets), and describing the community's ongoing effort to protect the mangroves from illegal clearing. The route emerges at a small community dock where a simple merienda of coconut water and native kakanin is served before the return paddle. This is genuine eco-tourism at its most tranquil — and at ₱1,200, one of the best-value experiences in all of Mindoro.
