About this tour

This three-day expedition is a serious high-altitude adventure across the rooftop of Luzon, linking Mount Pulag, the island's highest peak at 2,928 meters, with neighboring Mount Tabayoc, the second highest at 2,842 meters. Pulag is legendary for its grassland summit and the otherworldly sea of clouds that rolls in at dawn, plus some of the clearest Milky Way views in the country. The classic ascent climbs through pine and mossy montane forest before emerging onto the open dwarf-bamboo grasslands near the top, where sunrise above the clouds is a near-spiritual experience.

The route then traverses toward Tabayoc, a tougher and far less-traveled climb. Its trail is entirely forested, thick with mossy vegetation, slippery roots, steep pitches and the occasional leech, leading near the mystical Lake Tabeo. Spending three days lets you acclimatize to the cold, high environment and tackle multiple summits at a sustainable pace. Because this is protected national-park terrain at altitude, treks require permits, accredited guides and proper cold-weather gear; nights up here can be genuinely freezing.

About the area

This trek lies in Kabayan, Benguet, deep in the Cordillera mountain range of northern Luzon, within Mount Pulag National Park. The summits sit at the meeting point of Benguet, Ifugao and Nueva Vizcaya provinces. The cool, pine-clad highlands are usually accessed via Baguio City, the regional hub, and the area is celebrated for its sea of clouds, indigenous Ibaloi and Kalanguya culture, and pristine high-altitude ecosystems.

Frequently asked questions

How fit and experienced do I need to be?
This is a demanding multi-summit trek at altitude. Pulag via Ambangeg is approachable, but the Tabayoc traverse is forested, slippery and strenuous, so good fitness and prior hiking experience are important.
How cold does it get?
Very cold by Philippine standards. Pulag's grassland summit can drop near or below freezing at dawn, sometimes with frost (locally called andap), so proper layers, gloves and a warm sleeping bag are essential.
Do I need a guide and permit?
Yes. Mount Pulag is a protected national park, so an accredited guide, registration and a medical clearance are required, and group sizes and trails are regulated by park authorities.
