Pagsanjan Falls Day Trip from Manila
About this tour
The Pagsanjan River carves through a 15-kilometer gorge of sheer volcanic rock walls draped in hanging ferns, and the only way to fully experience it is the way Laguna locals have done for generations: by bamboo banca, powered by skilled banceros (boatmen) who have spent lifetimes reading every current and eddy in the gorge. The trip upstream is a battle against the rapids; the return downstream is a rush of white water that Hollywood actually filmed for Apocalypse Now (the opening napalm sequence was shot here).
Your van departs Manila by 6 AM to arrive in Pagsanjan town by 8 AM. After a briefing and life-jacket fitting, two banceros take you upstream through 14 rapids of increasing intensity, the canyon walls rising to 90 meters on either side. At the head of the gorge, Magdapio Falls thunders 22 meters into a natural lagoon — you're paddled through the spray on a bamboo raft, close enough to feel the mist on your face and hear nothing but the roar of water.
Lunch is served at a riverside restaurant before the exhilarating downstream return — shooting the rapids with gravity on your side, banceros steering with practiced pole-work through narrow chutes of churning water. It is genuinely thrilling and genuinely wet. Change of clothes strongly recommended. A provincial lakeside drive through Laguna's agricultural heartland completes the day before the return to Manila by early evening.
