About this tour

Every Holy Week, the heart-shaped island of Marinduque transforms into the stage for one of the Philippines' oldest and most spectacular religious festivals. The Moriones Festival sees hundreds of locals don elaborate hand-carved wooden masks and the armour of Roman centurions, retelling the story of Longinus, the half-blind soldier who pierced the side of the crucified Christ and was healed and converted by the blood that touched his eye. This two-day immersion places you inside that living passion play, from the fierce painted masks and plumed helmets to the week-long street pageantry that culminates in the dramatic capture and beheading of Longinus on Easter.

The tradition dates back to the Spanish era, begun by a priest in Mogpog who wanted a vivid way to mark Holy Week, and for many participants wearing the morion is a deeply personal panata, a religious vow offered in thanksgiving or penance. You will not just watch from the sidelines: your guide explains the symbolism behind every mask, costume, and ritual, takes you to the towns of Mogpog, Boac, and Gasan where the celebrations are strongest, and helps you photograph the moriones respectfully. It is a rare chance to witness faith, folk art, and theatre fused into a single unforgettable spectacle.
