About this tour

The jeepney is the Philippines' most recognisable icon — a kaleidoscopic extension of post-war American military vehicles that Filipinos transformed into rolling folk art. Every jeepney is a canvas: chrome horses, patron saints, movie stars, provincial pride, and abstract patterns layered in colours that somehow harmonise into beauty despite — or because of — the visual chaos.

This 2.5-hour workshop taught by a Pasig-based jeepney artist teaches you the iconographic vocabulary: the chrome horse motif, the lettering styles, the patron-saint placards, the use of metallic paints to create the signature jewel-box effect. You paint on a pre-primed metal panel the size of a jeepney side window — a piece you take home as a uniquely Filipino souvenir.

The instructor has painted jeepneys professionally for two decades and brings genuine craft knowledge rather than a tourist-simplified version of the technique. The session covers the history of jeepney art, the community of Sarao-era bodyshops that established the aesthetic, and the contemporary debate about preserving this tradition as modern e-jeepneys replace the originals.

About the area

Manila is the Philippines' capital and its most culturally layered city — Spanish colonial churches beside Art Deco buildings beside gleaming BGC towers, all connected by the jeepney network that defines daily urban life. The city's art scene increasingly celebrates indigenous and folk traditions, of which jeepney art is one of the most vivid.

Frequently asked questions

Within the jeepney iconographic vocabulary, yes — your instructor will help you choose motifs and arrange them on your panel.
How large is the finished artwork?
Panels are approximately 30 cm × 40 cm — easy to pack in checked luggage with bubble wrap.
