Limasawa Island — First Mass in the Philippines
About this tour
Limasawa is a tiny island off the southern tip of Southern Leyte, yet it holds one of the most important places in Philippine history. It was here, in Barangay Magallanes, that Father Pedro de Valderrama celebrated the first Christian Mass on Philippine soil on Easter Sunday, 31 March 1521, during Ferdinand Magellan's expedition. The National Historical Commission of the Philippines has officially affirmed Limasawa, and not Butuan, as the true site of that first Mass, a ruling that ended a long-running historical debate.
This full-day tour traces the footsteps of Magellan and the local ruler Rajah Kolambu, who welcomed the Spanish navigators and shared a meal with them before the Mass. You begin with a pumpboat crossing from the port of Padre Burgos on the Southern Leyte mainland, then ride a habal-habal motorbike up to the National Shrine of the First Mass. The site is crowned by the Magellan Shrine and a long flight of steps leading to a hilltop with sweeping views over the Bohol Sea.
Beyond its religious weight, Limasawa is a quiet, sun-baked island of fishing villages, coral coves and clear water. The tour pairs the solemnity of the historic shrine with time to take in the island's slow rhythm, making it both a pilgrimage and an off-the-beaten-path Visayan escape.
