Laguna & Rizal — Pagsanjan Falls Boat Shoot the Rapids

Shooting the Rapids at Pagsanjan Falls is one of the most famous adventures within easy reach of Manila, and this half-day trip delivers its full thrill. You board a dugout canoe, the bangka, steered by two expert boatmen, the bangkeros, who paddle and push you upriver through a stunning gorge. As you ascend, sheer canyon walls rise over 100 feet on either side, draped in tropical greenery, and you pass a series of smaller cascades spilling from the rock before reaching the main Pagsanjan Falls.

At the top, you can transfer to a bamboo raft and ride right beneath the thundering curtain of the falls into the Devil's Cave behind it, a soaking, exhilarating highlight. Then comes the famous descent: the bangkeros expertly guide the canoe back down through fourteen rapids, the water churning and splashing as the boat slaloms between boulders. The boatmen's skill, navigating these rapids using only their arms and legs, is a tradition celebrated each year in Pagsanjan's Bangkero Festival.
