About this tour

Isla Verde, or Verde Island, lies in the middle of the Verde Island Passage, the stretch of sea between Batangas and Mindoro that scientists have crowned the center of the center of marine shorefish biodiversity on the planet. This full-day diving trip from the Calatagan side of Batangas takes certified divers to one of the most extraordinary reefs in the country, a place harboring more than 1,700 species of fish and some 300 species of coral within an astonishingly small area.

The signature dive is the Verde Island drop-off and the famous Wall, a sheer coral cliff that plunges dramatically into the blue, smothered in soft corals, sponges and gorgonian fans. Currents here can be strong, the same nutrient-rich flows that pack the reef with life, drawing schooling fish, turtles and bigger pelagics, and there is even a site nicknamed the Washing Machine for its swirling water. Guided by local divemasters who read the tides, you typically log two dives in a single day, surfacing with the sense of having explored one of Batangas' last truly great reefs.

About the area

Verde Island sits in the Verde Island Passage off the southern coast of Batangas, with this trip launching from the Calatagan area at the western tip of the province, a few hours' drive from Manila. The passage is a 1.14-million-hectare biodiversity hotspot shared between Batangas and Oriental Mindoro and dotted with community-managed marine protected areas. It anchors a thriving Batangas dive scene that also includes Anilao and Puerto Galera nearby.

Frequently asked questions

What certification level is needed?
Verde Island is best for Advanced Open Water divers due to depth and currents, though some sheltered sections suit confident Open Water divers. Operators check experience before assigning dives.
Are the currents dangerous?
Currents can be strong, which is what makes the reef so rich. Local divemasters plan dives around the tides and choose sites to match conditions and your experience for safety.
Can non-divers join?
This is primarily a dive trip, but some operators allow snorkelers on calmer sites or accompanying companions to stay on the boat. Confirm options when booking if a non-diver is coming along.
