About this tour

Callao Cave in the Peñablanca Protected Landscape and Seascape is one of the most scientifically significant and visually spectacular cave systems in the Philippines. Seven interconnected chambers extend 300 metres into the limestone karst, large enough to hold cathedrals — and indeed the second chamber functions as one: a natural skylight opening in the ceiling illuminates an altar where Mass is regularly celebrated, creating an otherworldly sacred space that is simultaneously geological and spiritual.

The Peñablanca Protected Area was designated a UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve candidate for its rare karst ecosystem, which supports an extraordinary concentration of endemic cave-dwelling species including the Cagayan cave rat, giant cave gecko, and over 20 species of bats. The area contains more than 300 known caves, of which only Callao is fully developed for tourism — the rest are the domain of researchers and serious cavers.

After the cave tour, the Pinacanauan River provides a completely different adventure: a gentle kayak through the karst valley where limestone cliffs rise 100-200 metres on both sides, draped with ferns and hanging roots, with the clear green river winding between them. Kingfishers, herons, and the occasional monitor lizard keep you company on the water. The absolute highlight — if you time the tour for late afternoon — is the bat emergence: as the sun touches the western cliff line, millions of Rousettus amplexicaudatus pour from the cave mouth in a continuous black ribbon that spirals upward and disperses into the darkening valley, a spectacle that takes a full half-hour to complete.

Callao Cave is well-lit with concrete pathways through all 7 chambers. No crawling or squeezing required — it is accessible to most fitness levels. The chapel chamber has natural light from a skylight opening.
What is the bat emergence?
At dusk, millions of Geoffroy's rousette bats exit the cave in a continuous stream that can last 30-40 minutes — one of the most spectacular natural events in the Philippines. The silhouette of the bat column against the sunset sky is extraordinary.
