Calaguas Island Camping — Luzon's Best Beach
About this tour
Calaguas is the powder-white beach that southern Luzon kept secret for years. This two-day camping trip takes you to Mahabang Buhangin (literally Long Sand) on Tinaga Island, a long crescent of squeaky white sand backed by grassy hills and fringed by clear turquoise water, off the coast of Camarines Norte. There are no big resorts and no nightlife here, just tents pitched a few metres from the waterline, a sky thick with stars, and the kind of barefoot simplicity that has all but disappeared from Boracay or Palawan.
You reach the island by an outrigger boat ride of roughly two hours from the mainland fishing ports near Vinzons or Paracale, so the journey itself feels like an expedition. Days are spent swimming, snorkelling, hiking the headland for views over the whole bay, and watching local fishermen bring in their catch. Meals are simple Filipino fare, often a grilled seafood boodle fight on the sand. This is back-to-basics island camping, perfect for travellers who want raw natural beauty over luxury.
Facilities are deliberately basic: cold bucket showers, simple toilets and limited electricity. Bring cash, reef-safe sunscreen and a power bank. In return you get one of the most beautiful and uncrowded beaches in the Philippines, all to yourself by night.

About the area
Calaguas is a cluster of islands off Camarines Norte in the Bicol region of southern Luzon, reached via the towns of Vinzons or Paracale near Daet. Long overlooked in favour of Bicol's volcanoes, the islands have become a magnet for campers and backpackers chasing untouched white-sand beaches, with Tinaga Island's Mahabang Buhangin as the crown jewel.
