Bicol Whale Shark Watching — Donsol
About this tour
Donsol, a quiet coastal town in Sorsogon, is celebrated as the Whale Shark Capital of the World, one of the very few places where you can reliably swim alongside the planet's largest fish in their natural habitat. Each year these gentle giants, known locally as butanding, gather in Donsol Bay to feed on the rich plankton washed down by the Donsol River.
The experience is carefully managed for sustainability. You board a boat with a trained Butanding Interaction Officer (BIO) and a spotter, and when a whale shark is sighted the BIO guides you on exactly when and how to slip into the water and swim beside it. There is no scuba, no touching and no chasing, just snorkelling respectfully alongside an animal that can reach more than 10 metres long.
Donsol pioneered responsible whale-shark tourism in the Philippines, putting the welfare of the animals first. Sightings are at their best from February to May during the peak season, and floating beside one of these spotted leviathans is a genuinely once-in-a-lifetime encounter.
