Besao Sunrise Trek & Traditional Cordillera Village
About this tour
Besao is the less-visited neighbour of Sagada — a municipality of rice-terrace farming communities and traditional Kankana-ey villages just 30 minutes from the famous tourist hub, but a world apart in atmosphere. While Sagada has developed significant visitor infrastructure, Besao remains a working agricultural community where traditional life continues undisturbed. This sunrise trek is the perfect way to experience the Cordillera's most spectacular natural phenomenon while connecting with a community that has watched those same sunrises for a thousand years.
The pre-dawn drive to the trailhead is part of the experience: the mountain road in headlight beams, the cold air at 1,800 metres above sea level, the smell of pine resin and wood smoke from the earliest-rising households. The trail climbs through pine forest for 45 minutes to the Besao ridgeline just as the eastern sky turns indigo, then rose, then the explosive orange of highland sunrise. The sea of clouds — when conditions are right — fills the valleys below while the Cordillera peaks emerge as dark islands above the mist, a view that is simultaneously intimate (you are standing on a mountain) and vast (you can see 100 km of ridgeline).
The descent through the rice terraces as morning light rakes across the terrace walls reveals the extraordinary engineering of this ancient agricultural system: every wall hand-laid from local stone, every terrace precisely level, the irrigation channels moving water from the cloud-forest springs above by gravity alone. In the village below, a Kankana-ey family hosts breakfast: pinikpikan chicken soup with etag (smoked mountain pork) and ginger, fresh-steamed mountain rice, roasted camote, and a small cup of tapuy rice wine to mark the morning. This is highland Philippines at its most authentic and most generous.
