Bataan Death March Trail — Historical Pilgrimage
About this tour
The Capas National Shrine in Tarlac marks the tragic end point of the Bataan Death March, one of the most harrowing episodes of World War II in the Philippines. In April 1942, around 66,000 Filipino and 10,000 American prisoners of war were forced by the Japanese military to march some 160 kilometers; survivors were packed into stifling boxcars to Capas and then made to walk the final stretch to Camp O'Donnell, where thousands more perished from disease, starvation, and executions.
This full-day historical pilgrimage brings that history to life on the very ground where it ended. At the heart of the 54-hectare shrine stands a 73-meter obelisk symbolizing peace, surrounded by a black marble memorial wall engraved with the names of more than 30,000 Filipinos interned at the camp. Thousands of trees, each planted in memory of the dead, spread across the grounds, alongside separate memorials to the Philippines, the United States, and the former Czechoslovakia.
Proclaimed a national shrine in 1991, Capas is the focus of solemn commemorations each April 9 on Araw ng Kagitingan, the Day of Valor. Your guide recounts the events of 1942 and the courage they demanded, making this a moving, reflective day for anyone drawn to Philippine and wartime history.
