Agusan del Sur — Tribal Manobo Village Visit
About this tour
In the vast wetlands of Agusan del Sur lives one of the Philippines' most remarkable indigenous communities: the Agusanon Manobo, who have adapted to life on the water for thousands of years. This two-day eco-cultural journey takes you deep into the Agusan Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary to the floating village of Panlabuhan, where homes of wood and coconut thatch rise and fall with the seasonal water levels of the marsh. It is a way of life found almost nowhere else on earth.
From a jump-off point at Bunawan, you charter a motorised boat along the Agusan River and into the labyrinth of channels and lakes that make up this immense wetland, one of the most ecologically significant in Asia. You stay in a floating guesthouse, eat with the community, and learn directly from the Manobo about their environment, traditions, and the locally-run cultural tourism programme they have built. The community still practices ancestral rituals such as the panagtawag, an offering to celestial spirits to protect their guests, offering a window into a worldview shaped entirely by the water.
This is respectful, immersive travel at its best: a genuine connection with an indigenous community in one of the country's last great wildernesses, far beyond the reach of ordinary tourism.

About the area
Agusan del Sur is a landlocked province in the Caraga region of north-eastern Mindanao, defined by the sprawling Agusan Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary, one of the most important freshwater wetlands in the Philippines. Dozens of lakes and the meandering Agusan River shape a watery world that has been home to the Agusanon Manobo since time immemorial. The towns of Bunawan and Loreto serve as gateways into this remote and biodiverse landscape.
