Marawi City in Lanao del Sur was severely damaged during the 2017 siege by ISIS-affiliated groups and is undergoing reconstruction. The city has deep cultural significance as the centre of Islamic culture in Mindanao and was historically known for its market and Maranao heritage arts (okir woodcarving, malong textiles). Not recommended for tourism until reconstruction is fully complete.
Getting there
Fly MNL-CGY then bus/van, or take a ferry from Cebu or Davao.
Best time to visit
November to April — dry season; avoid monsoon months.

Tawi-Tawi pristine beaches, Jolo historical sites, Sulu diving, Bongao island hopping.
