Davao City is Mindanao's most accessible city and a surprisingly excellent base for adventure — it's also the durian capital of the Philippines (try it at the night market on Magsaysay Park, P150–200 for a whole fruit). Mount Apo, the country's highest peak at 2,954 metres, is a 2–3 day trek from the city. Samal Island (a 10-minute ferry) has decent beaches and snorkelling, popular with local weekenders.
